Italy’s renowned cities like Rome, Florence and Milan captivate millions, however, if you want to escape the crowds then look no further than this picturesque village.

The enchanting mediaeval village of Castelsardo which finds itself nestled amidst the Gulf of Asinara is one of the most charming small towns in Northern Sardinia and is 251 miles away from the Italian capital.

The romantic fishing village dazzles visitors with its emerald waters, beautiful beaches and city landscape.

Perched on the hill of St, Matthew sits Castello dei Doria, an ancient church that dates back to the 12th century. The castle provides a stunning piece of mediael history and the best part is that it is admission free. The Doria family had it built as part of their defensive line in the historical region of Anglona, Sardinia.

As you stroll through the city centre you will notice traditional baskets hanging outside houses, these beautiful decorations are popular across Sardinia.

Be sure to take a trip to Padraladda beach where you will be amazed by the crystal clear waters. Here you can take part in some water sports such as windsurfing, kayaking or kitesurfing.

The coast below the historic centre of Castelsardo is lined with a nice trail that offers incredible views. You can walk the length of the trail from the wooden bridge, located in the Citadel, or you can walk just parts of it.

With Castelsardo being a fishing village you will find a wide range of fish based dishes. Some typical traditional dishes include squid ink risotto, lobster served in Aragonese style and Sa Cassola di Castelsardo , which is a mixed fish soup from the Gulf of Asinara.

During Easter several events dedicated to local food and crafts are organised to celebrate the holy period.

Visitors can choose to stay in cosy B&B’s or larger resorts.

The nearest airport to Castelsardo is Alghero which is 29 miles away. Olbia airport is also only 41 miles away.
