An automatic berth in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic will be on the line when the starting gate opens in the 2024 Haskell Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park. In addition to having all entry fees paid for the Classic, the connections of the Haskell Stakes 2024 winner also will receive a $10,000 travel allowance to the Breeders’ Cup, which will be held at Del Mar in November. On Saturday, Belmont Stakes runner-up Mindframe is the 9-5 favorite in the 2024 Haskell Stakes odds. Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch is 5-2. On Saturday morning, it was announced that Fierceness will scratch.
Post time for the $1 million race is 5:45 p.m. ET. With an accomplished field set to enter the starting gate on Saturday, you’ll want to see what SportsLine writer Gene Menez has to say before making any Haskell Stakes picks or horse racing predictions.
A former reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, Menez covered an array of sports, including horse racing, for the magazine and its website for almost 14 years. Between 2010 and 2012, he served as SI’s handicapper for the Triple Crown races and correctly predicted Super Saver to win the Kentucky Derby in 2010.
In 2015, while writing for Sports on Earth, Menez accurately gave out the Kentucky Derby superfecta (American Pharoah, Firing Line, Dortmund and Frosted), which paid $1,268.20 for $2. Then in 2017, he tweeted out his Kentucky Derby picks, including Always Dreaming to win. He also hit the Pick 4, which paid almost $6,900 on a $1 bet.
In a span of seven races last year for SportsLine, he cashed the winner of the Lecomte Stakes, the exacta in the Southwest Stakes, the winner of the Holy Bull Stakes, the winner of the Sam F. Davis Stakes, and the trifecta in the Jenny Wiley Stakes. He also nailed National Treasure’s win in the Preakness. In May, Menez gave out 18-1 Mystik Dan as a live longshot in the Kentucky Derby. And last month he nailed Trikari to win the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes. Anyone who has followed him is way up.
For Saturday, Menez has handicapped the 2024 Haskell Stakes field, made his picks and constructed his best bets. You can head to SportsLine now to see them.
Top 2024 Haskell Stakes predictions
One surprise: Menez is almost completely fading Dornoch, even though he just won the Belmont Stakes. A full brother to last year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Mage, Dornoch matched his brother’s Triple Crown exploits in his last start by winning the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. In that race he pressed a soft pace and held off Mindframe to win.
However, all four of Dornoch’s career wins have come in races with slow paces, and Menez does not believe that Dornoch will get the same setup on Saturday with the equally fast Tuscan Sky, Mindframe and Timberlake also in the race. “His Belmont Stakes victory was significantly better than any of his previous races, which makes me wonder if it was just a fluke,” Menez told SportsLine. He is using Dornoch only sparingly in his wagers. You can see all of Menez’s 2024 Haskell Stakes bets here.
How to make 2024 Haskell Stakes picks
Instead, Menez’s top pick is a horse who “has a lot of upside.” He also is also high on an “intriguing” double-digit longshot. He is including these horses in his wagers, and so should you. He’s sharing which horses to back only at SportsLine.
So who wins Haskell Stakes 2024? What double-digit longshot has a big chance to run well, and how has Menez constructed his wagers? Visit SportsLine to see Menez’s picks for the Haskell Stakes, all from the expert who gave out Mystik Dan as a live longshot in the Kentucky Derby, and find out.
