For decades, when international families considered sending their children overseas, the same destinations dominated the conversation. The UK represented academic prestige, Switzerland was synonymous with elite boarding, Canada offered immigration opportunities, and the US promised world-renowned universities.
Today, however, the conversation is changing. Families are no longer choosing a destination based solely on the reputation of a school or university. They are asking a much broader question: Where can my child build a successful future?
That shift is transforming international education, and Spain is increasingly well positioned to benefit.
The decision-making process has evolved beyond academic rankings. Families now consider affordability, safety, quality of life, employability, language acquisition, university progression and long-term career opportunities. Rather than viewing secondary education and university as separate decisions, many are beginning to see them as part of one educational journey.
Spain offers exactly that. The country’s international school sector has grown rapidly over the past decade. According to the International Schools Database, Spain is now home to more than 445 international schools, spanning more than 28 cities, making it one of Europe’s largest international school markets.
Alongside this growth, approximately 35 international schools currently offer boarding, creating increasing opportunities for pupils seeking a residential international education before progressing to university.
Many of these schools have developed specialist pathways that extend beyond the traditional classroom. Elite sports programmes have become a defining feature of the Spanish boarding landscape, particularly in football, tennis, golf, swimming and sailing.
Rather than forcing talented young athletes to choose between education and sport, these schools enable pupils to pursue both simultaneously, combining internationally recognised qualifications with professional coaching and year-round training made possible by Spain’s climate and sporting infrastructure.
For many talented young people, these opportunities extend well beyond school.
High-performance sport can open doors to university scholarships in countries including the US, while others continue their sporting development alongside higher education in Spain or elsewhere in Europe. Increasingly, families are recognising that boarding education can support both academic and athletic ambitions without requiring one to be sacrificed for the other.
This is particularly significant because today’s internationally mobile families are planning further ahead than ever before.
Boarding school is no longer viewed as the final destination. Instead, it has become the first stage of a much longer educational pathway.

Spain’s higher education sector strengthens this proposition considerably. Spain’s universities now educate more than 1.8 million students across public and private institutions, making it one of Europe’s largest higher education systems.
The latest detailed government data show that 149,280 international students were enrolled during the 2023/24 academic year, representing 11.5% of total university enrolments, with particularly strong growth in postgraduate study. Together with 91 universities spread across the country, this provides international students with an extensive range of academic opportunities.
Importantly, these students are not travelling to Spain simply to study Spanish. They are choosing degrees in business, finance, engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, medicine, dentistry, health sciences, architecture, law, international relations, hospitality, tourism and sport sciences.
Equally significant is the rapid expansion of programs taught entirely in English or through bilingual English-Spanish delivery. Students can increasingly begin their studies in English while developing Spanish language skills that enhance their employability and broaden their career options across Europe and Latin America.
For boarding pupils, this creates a powerful advantage. A student arriving in Spain at the age of 13 or 14 has several years to develop academic English, gain fluency in Spanish, understand the country’s culture and education system, and prepare for university applications.
By the time they graduate from secondary school, they are not arriving in Spain as international newcomers, they are already part of the educational ecosystem.

None of this suggests that Spain is replacing traditional destinations such as the UK, Switzerland or the US. Those countries will continue to play an important role within international education.
However, Spain is no longer simply an alternative.It is becoming a destination of choice in its own right. For schools, universities and policymakers, this represents an important opportunity.
The challenge is no longer convincing families that Spain is a wonderful place to live, many already recognise that. The opportunity lies in demonstrating that Spain can offer something far more valuable.
Students can expect a complete educational pathway that begins with internationally recognised secondary education, develops through boarding, bilingualism and personal growth, continues into a diverse university sector offering programmes in English and Spanish, and ultimately prepares young people for successful global careers.
As international education continues to evolve, the destinations that thrive will be those that offer more than excellent schools alone. They will provide a connected ecosystem where education, wellbeing, language, culture and employability reinforce one another.
Spain’s opportunity is no longer simply to attract more international students. It is to establish itself as one of Europe’s most complete international education destinations, where pupils can begin their journey at school and continue seamlessly into university and beyond.
