Art Meets Science in Unique Paleontology Exhibit Opening April 21 at Pauly Friedman Art Gallery
“Lost Worlds: Microphotography of Extinct Species” to open at Pauly Friedman Art Gallery at Misericordia University
Art meets science in this exhibition of photographs and artifacts from the field of paleontology. Co-curated with Mateusz Wosik, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at Misericordia University, this selection of photographs by researchers from all over the world highlights the natural beauty of cellular structures that compose some of the most fascinating creatures to have walked the earth. The exhibition opens the evening of Thursday, April 21, and runs through Friday, July 22, 2022.
In addition to Wosik, the exhibition will feature works by Jessie Atterholt, Ph.D., Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, California; Kentaro Chiba, Ph.D., University of Science, Okayama, Japan; Gregory F. Funston, Ph.D.,
University of Edinburgh, Scotland; Christian Heck, Ph.D., Pacific Northwest University, Yakima, Washington; Aaron R.H. LeBlanc, Ph.D., King’s College, London, England; Carmen Nacarino-Meneses, Ph.D., Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont, Barcelona, Spain; Ashley W. Poust, Ph.D., San Diego Natural History Museum, California; Frank J. Varriale, Ph.D., King’s College Wilkes-Barre; and Megan Whitney, Ph.D., Harvard University, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The public is invited to a free reception on Thursday, April 21, at 5pm. Joseph Curran, Ph.D., professor of religious studies, and Faculty Senate chair, will give the University Welcome. Live music will feature vocalist Wendy Hinton, and Patrick Temple, Misericordia University adjunct professor of guitar. Curators Wosik and Lalaine Bangilan Little, PhD, director of the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery and adjunct professor of fine arts, will be on hand to talk about the artworks. The “Lost Worlds” opening is one of many academic events held in conjunction with Inauguration Week, celebrating the inauguration of Misericordia’s 15th President, Daniel J. Myers, Ph.D.
Family-friendly programs designed to introduce children to the field of paleontology will be held this summer. An on-campus free family night with a recommended age of 7 to 12 is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, 5 p.m. in Insalaco 218. A second family night will be held at R/C Wilkes Barre Movies 14 on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at 5pm. This is a ticketed event for ages 13 and up. More details will be announced in the summer.
