Schools are racing to teach students how to use AI. That is necessary, but it is not enough. The workplace advantage will increasingly belong to people who can decide when an AI output is useful, when it is incomplete and when it is wrong.
Stanford Digital Economy Lab’s August update shows why this matters. The employment shortfall for U.S. workers ages 22–25 in highly AI-exposed occupations widened from 15 percent in the July 2025 data vintage to 19 percent by June 2026. The easiest early-career tasks are exactly the ones AI can often handle first.
Schools therefore need to treat AI as a practice partner for judgment. A student can use AI to summarize background information, but then should be asked to identify what evidence is missing. AI can propose a solution to a science problem, but the student should test its assumptions. AI can draft an argument, but the student should compare sources, identify tradeoffs and defend a final position.
That progression can start young. Elementary students can compare an AI answer with a trusted text and explain differences. Middle school students can work with conflicting evidence and choose what they trust. High school students can tackle messy career-connected cases in which there is no single correct answer and must document how they reached a decision.
The goal is not to make every student an AI specialist. It is to make students harder to fool and faster to develop. Schools should measure whether learners can verify claims, recognize exceptions, ask for missing information, communicate uncertainty and take responsibility for a conclusion.
Recent news has highlighted career readiness as a systemwide progression and has also stressed that AI should strengthen rather than replace human expertise. Those ideas belong together. If AI handles more routine production, schools should spend more time on the reasoning and responsibility that machines cannot own.
The best preparation for an AI-shaped labor market is not simply more exposure to AI. It is more practice making decisions when AI is in the room.
