DARPA launched the Lift Challenge last November with a prize pool of $6.5 million and a single, brutally simple goal: build a drone that can carry a payload weighing more than four times its own body weight, a threshold no existing heavy-lift drone comes close to reaching. Conventional delivery and cargo drones on the market today typically top out at payload ratios well under 2 to 1, meaning a drone that weighs 50 pounds (23 kilograms) might struggle to carry even 100 pounds (45 kilograms) of cargo. DARPA’s bet was that opening the challenge to unconventional designs, rather than dictating a specific engineering approach, would push someone past the 4 to 1 mark the same way earlier DARPA competitions produced breakthroughs in autonomous vehicles and computer networking.
The competition unfolded at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, where DARPA had invited 124 teams to compete and 76 actually made it to the flight line, according to DARPA’s own accounting of the event. Teams flew a five-nautical-mile (9.3 kilometer) circuit course in head-to-head live trials, taking off with a loaded payload, flying a set distance, dropping the cargo, and completing the remaining distance empty, all within a 30-minute time limit. Avidrone Inc. entered a design that stood out precisely because it wasn’t exotic. While rival teams flew multirotor drones and experimental configurations built specifically to chase the payload-to-weight metric, Avidrone’s aircraft, named Katana, used a conventional single-main-rotor helicopter layout with a tail boom, the same basic configuration that has defined production helicopters since the 1940s, according to DroneXL‘s reporting on the event. The Katana weighed 29.3 pounds (13.3 kilograms) and carried a payload of 112.4 pounds (51 kilograms) of cast iron around the course, producing the 3.84 to 1 ratio DARPA confirmed in its announcement. DroneXL and DefPost both reported that Avidrone completed its winning run in 19 minutes and 17 seconds, well inside the 30-minute limit, and DefPost added that the Katana’s aircraft platform, propulsion system, and flight-control technologies were all developed in-house by the company. A component list published by DefPost pointed to battery-electric propulsion, with battery modules supplied by Titan Batteries powering motors run through separate speed controllers.
No team reached the 4 to 1 target DARPA set when it opened the competition, a fact that triggered a prize rule DroneXL had flagged before the event’s first weigh-in: because the top ratio fell short of the stated goal, every podium payout was cut in half. Avidrone collected $1.25 million instead of the $2.5 million top prize, MTech Operations LLC took second place with a 3.64 to 1 ratio for $750,000, and Xtreme Aerial Concepts finished third at 3.45 to 1 for $500,000, according to DroneXL’s reporting.

The runner-up and third-place finishers took very different paths to their results.
