The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi held its 56th convocation ceremony on August 2. The event was presided over by Shri Harish Salve, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of IIT Delhi. Dr Tessy Thomas, former Director General (Aeronautical Systems), DRDO, and currently Vice Chancellor of Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education, Kanyakumari, was the chief guest.

According to a statement, chief guest, Dr Thomas addressed the graduating batch, urging students to contribute to areas such as decarbonisation, digital equity, bio-innovation, and water conservation as the world undergoes technological shifts.
Degrees awarded across UG, PG, and PhD levels
A total of 2,764 students received degrees and diplomas at the ceremony. This included 530 doctoral degrees—the highest number of PhDs awarded by the institute in a single year. The graduating cohort also comprised 735 female students and 43 international students from around 20 countries.
IIT Delhi New Courses: Five new offerings beyond traditional degrees
Among the graduating students, 1,048 completed their BTech degrees and 488 completed their MTech degrees. The institute also awarded 62 Master of Science (Research), 218 Master of Science, and 172 MBA degrees. Other programmes included Master of Public Policy, Master of Design, Dual Degrees (BTech + MTech), and various postgraduate and undergraduate diplomas.

This convocation also marked the graduation of the first batch of B.Tech. students in Energy Engineering. In the postgraduate category, the first cohort from three new programmes—M.Tech. in Robotics, M.S. (Research) in VLSI Design, Tools and Technology, and M.S. (Research) in Artificial Intelligence—received their degrees.
Twenty-year-old Chandan Godara, a BTech graduate in Civil Engineering, was the youngest recipient of a degree, while Gopal Krishan Taneja, aged 63, received a PhD, making him the oldest graduate this year.
Additionally, two students, Shreyansh Gupta (MTech in Thermal Engineering) and Soumili Chakraborti (MTech in Polymer Science and Technology), received the Perfect Ten Gold Medals for scoring a CGPA of 10 out of 10 in their respective programmes. Additionally, Institute Silver Medals were awarded to 16 students for securing the highest CGPA in their courses.
