A record 113 Pearland Independent School District competitors counted multiple successes at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association competition April 2 in San Antonio.
The Pearland Junior High West and Sablatura Middle School team secured the bronze in sweepstakes, third place in science, fourth place in math, seventh place in number sense and eighth place in calculator applications. Competitors from Pearland Junior High South and Rogers Middle School also represented the district.
From Pearland Junior High West, Justin Braden finished first in science, and Alan Yao placed first in math, 20th in number sense and 20th in science. Additional top 20 finishers include: Tanishta Anbu, Josh Anino, Nuhan Hasan, Geoffrey Liu, Shaotan Liu, Caleb Ni, Grae Paterson, Roy Wang, Efran Zhao and Jerry Zhu.
Sablatura Middle School’s top 20 finishers were: Sofia Castillo, Ethan Chen, Leah Hong, Sarah Jacob, Emerson Li, Andrew Lu, Andrew Nguyen, Rexford Pan, Haobo Shi, Suya Yang and Daniel Xi. Rogers Middle School’s Caroline Mao also finished in the top 20.
Coaches include: Rogers’ Jennifer Phillips; Sablatura’s Margaret Needler and Kacey Hart; PJH South’s Ashlyn Beard; and PJH West’s Jamie Williams and Susan Kovach.
‘Leader of the Pack’ grabs 7 Tommy Tune nominations
With its spring production of the Broadway musical retrospective “Leader of the Pack,” Pearland High School’s theater department is in the running for Outstanding Musical in Theatre Under the Stars’ 2022 Tommy Tune Awards program.
The cast and crew earned seven out of 13 possible nominations, including Cheramie Hopper for Outstanding Director.
Shelby Garrett received a nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role, and Granger Lusk was recognized with a nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role.
David Barker, Daniella Fink, Simeon Love and Lusk received a nod for Outstanding Lighting Design. Barker, Love and Lusk also earned a nomination for Outstanding Scenic Design.
Michael Kessler was recognized with a nomination for Outstanding Music Director.
Winners will be announced May 27 during the 2022 Tommy Tune Awards virtual ceremony.
Collegiate honor society initiates Pearland natives
Four Pearland students have been inducted into the all-discipline honor society Phi Kappa Phi.
Ana Calleja and Anna Schneider, of Texas A&M University, and Claire Fuller and Vivienne Pham, of University of Houston, are among the approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to join the organization this year. The Phi Theta Kappa Mu Upsilon chapter at Alvin Community College welcomed its newest members April 12.
