  1. Tell us about your university and its role within Ireland’s higher education landscape.

South East Technological University (SETU) is Ireland’s newest university and the first technological university in the south-east region. With its main campuses in Waterford, Carlow, and Wexford, SETU is uniquely placed to serve a wide region and connect education, research, and industry. We’re committed to driving regional development while building a strong international profile that attracts students and staff from across the globe.
  2. What sets your university apart from others?

SETU combines the scale and impact of a large university with the personal approach of a close-knit community. Our multi-campus structure gives students the chance to experience both vibrant city life and supportive regional campuses. Strong partnerships with industry, cutting-edge research in areas like sustainable energy and advanced manufacturing, and an entrepreneurial culture set us apart.
  3. What makes Ireland such an attractive destination for international students?

Ireland offers a friendly, welcoming environment together with globally respected education. For international students, the chance to study in English while being part of a thriving EU member state with close ties to global industries is hugely attractive. Ireland’s culture, innovation ecosystem, and graduate opportunities make it the smart choice.

  4. How do you see the Irish higher education sector evolving over the next five years?

The sector will continue to expand its international footprint, with technological universities like SETU playing a central role. We see a stronger focus on applied research, digital learning, and global collaboration, ensuring Ireland remains competitive and relevant in a rapidly changing world.

  5. Are there particular markets or student segments you’re looking to grow in the near future?

We are actively developing links in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and North America, while also strengthening partnerships in Europe. We see strong potential in postgraduate, research, and professional learners, who will benefit from SETU’s innovation-driven and industry-connected approach.

  6. Outside of work, what’s one thing a visitor to Ireland shouldn’t miss?

A trip to Ireland’s Ancient East is a must – from the stunning Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark in Waterford to Kilkenny’s medieval heritage, the south-east offers a blend of culture, history, and natural beauty that’s unique to our region.

  7. What attracted you to take part in The PIE Live Ireland?

The conference is a fantastic opportunity to showcase SETU on the international stage. We’re eager to connect with partners, share insights, and explore new opportunities in international recruitment and collaboration. It’s also a chance to highlight the role of the newly established Technological Universities in shaping the future of Irish higher education.

  8. Which sessions on the agenda are you most looking forward to attending, and why?

We’re especially interested in sessions on diversifying international student recruitment and exploring the intersection of education and industry. These themes resonate with SETU’s mission to provide future-focused education that equips graduates to thrive in a global economy.

Look out for…

Keep an eye out for Donal McAlister, international affairs manager at SETU at The PIE Live Ireland.

Spotlight on… South East Technological University

If you had to sum up your approach to international education in three words, what would they be?

Inclusive, ethical and affirming

What’s a typical day like for you at your institution?

No two days are the same at SETU. A typical day might involve meeting with colleagues across our campuses, engaging with international students to hear their experiences, and working with our global network of partners on current and new opportunities.

Where will we find you at The PIE Live Ireland?

I will be participating as a speaker during one of the afternoon sessions but other than that I will try and attend as many talks as possible and I also look forward to the many networking opportunities that this conference will provide.
