The U.S. Department of Education (ED) will continue to send billions of formula dollars through its own online G5 grants system this fall, and not through the portal run by the Department of Labor, where most K-12 programs have been moved. This includes $10.8 billion of Title I formula grants for schools serving low-income students and $1.7 billion for teacher professional development through Title II, according to a statement made to Education Week,
More than $12.5 billion, approved by Congress in February, for K-12 schools is set to be released to states by the ED on Oct. 1, but competitive education grants will be awarded by other agencies (Health and Human Services, Interior, Justice, Labor, State, and the Treasury) which have recently taken over responsibility for them.
In July, the ED distributed the first instalment of the $890 million in congressionally approved Title III funding for English learners and multilingual programs right at the start of the month, adhering strictly to the legal July 1 deadline. The remaining October 1 installment will be released directly into state education agency systems.
